BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN – IT WAS nearly 50 years ago, in 1960, when then-Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew first visited Brunei. The occasion: the 46th birthday celebrations of its then-ruler, Sultan Haji Omar Ali Saifuddien III.

It was to be the start of a long and deep friendship between the two countries.

Yesterday, Minister Mentor Lee was in Brunei again, this time on a three-day working visit, during which he would also deliver the first Sultan Haji Omar Ali Saifuddien Memorial Lecture, in memory of the late ruler who died in 1986.
