Suzhou was the ‘right decision’: MM

28May09

More schizophrenic reporting about the Suzhou Industrial Park from the Singapore press.  TODAY:

FIFTEEN years on, the Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP) is a success story which will continue to be replicated in other Chinese cities.

Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew who was in Suzhou for SIP’s celebrations of its 15th anniversary, said Singapore made the “right decision on heeding Beijing’s advice when we chose Suzhou”.

The defensive tone of the article makes no sense unless you’re aware of the project background and what “Beijing’s advice” is referring to (that is, selling Singapore’s controlling stake), but due the high profile of the project and its close association with Lee Kuan Yew in particular, the article cannot even hint at it.
