Lee Kuan Yew calls for understanding towards immigration policy

04Feb12

Playing the broken record again.  CNA, with video:

Former Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew has called for the understanding of Singaporeans towards the government’s decision to continue taking in immigrants.

Speaking at a Lunar New Year gathering in his constituency of Tanjong Pagar on Friday, Mr Lee said Singapore’s per capita income is one of the highest in Asia.

But it faces an ageing and shrinking population. Last year, the birth rate was 1.15, with the Chinese leading the decline among other races.

Mr Lee said Japan also suffers from similar problems. But its decision not to take in migrants has contributed to economic stagnation.

He said: “Our choice must be the other one – taking in immigrants. I know Singaporeans do not feel very comfortable seeing so many strange new faces, but the alternative is economy stagnation and worse, nobody to look after our old people later on.”

    What other solution are Singaporeans
    expecting from him(LKY).
    Or, what solution do Singaporeans
believe LKY has for the state if he
does not resort to importing foreigners?

The root of the problem is really the high cost of bringing up children in Singapore.

Our society places so much on excellence that parents feel compelled to provide the best education possible, in order to give their kids a competitive edge.
Parents also need to spend time and watch out for appropriate opportunity to pass on valuable moral lessons.

These are two of many things on the minds of every parent, but they are time consuming and require much energy. Moreover job demands are ever increasing amidst high living cost. It is not like we can survive on tapioca and sweet potato like in the kampong days.

Is it any wonder if more people choose to remain childless or single?

The Stop At Two Policy was
    a big blunder.

    Importing aliens to settle in
    Sin is a fatal blunder.

Sometimes when a person understands only one thing, it is better to seek more knowledge before criticising others.

One such knowledge is to realise that God gives us two eyes, two ears and a brain with two halves but only one mouth. Sigh…

It never fails to get me wondering why on Earth
some national leaders(statesmen) are so hated
    by their subjects(citizenry).

    In Singapore,
what could be or are the reasons?

Enough has been said of how a young nation set in a unique environment which was still fresh from colonial rule, had to grapple its way in an often fickle international political landscape to emerge a respected First World Nation at a tender age of 46 years old.

One has only to read the news i.e. Bloomberg, BBC etc. to realise there is no perfect government nor is there perfect policies, even amongst First World Nations. The world is full of people with their unique version for a nation/ society/ community and some are even ready to die to impose it on others. On the other hand, there are too few who has both vision and capabilities. We should count our blessings.

Those who believe they have both vision and capabilities, should stand up and be counted, offer your talents through the many channels available from the incumbent and challengers. That glint of idea could just unearth the most brilliant of diamonds.

Yes, just like artists, some are really better off dead. Only then will we know how good they were.

  10. MM Lee has always been staunch at maintaining the current ethnic ratios. Just look at ICA, PRs would definitely complain that PRCs, despite their poor aptitude in English, are welcomed to Singapore by the dozens. He hopes that they would refine the way SG Chinese speak Mandarin or PuTongHua.

On Eugenics: In 1970s, he told the descendants of immigrants (of all races) to have 2 children, and without much persuasion, it drop WAY BELOW 2 since the 1980s. Then now, he wants to fill those places with richer, “high qualtiy stock” of mainland Chinese, Hindi Indians, and Caucasians plus a bit of Arabs. Cheap and easy method to raise GDP, since they are already wealthy, i.e. NO need to spend precious treasury money on local-born SG, with healthcare, education….Instead, he can collect more taxes from working adults and enrich himself and his fellow chamber men with all that extra wealth. (proclaiming that they, as ministers of this tiny city-state, have the right to exploit the country’s only resource-people)

But at the end of the day, when the old fart felt he was being rediculed by fact, challenged by a person with a more humane heart and whose purpose was to fight for the rights of sgreans,he jailed him through his kangaroo courts.

And the rest they say,are history, plague with socrn and vindictiveness,to the point that even the dead are not spared at an eulogy.

That glint of viciousness, pettiness and small mindedness could just unearth the most venomus of snakes, scums and crooks.

Yes, just like artists, some are really better off dead. Only then will we know how good they were and thus honored and some better left forgotten….flushed down the toilet like a piece of human crap.

lee kuan yew, social architect, investment guru, language expert and bullcrapping extraordinaire, what will sgp or *gasps* the world do without him????

me,i jus take a dump and read my daily news on the IHT website.

I feel sad about the negative comments made against LKY. I am sure that you have better ideas backed up by a solid track record. But then again, chances are, you don’t – seeing how you comport yourself in writing. If you people are Singaporean, I am ashamed for you. Yes, while we can disagree with LKY’s policies, that does not give you permission to mock LKY using vulgar language you use in this forum. At the very least LKY deserves respect.
