Lee Kuan Yew in Moscow

10Jun08

Lee Kuan Yew goes to Moscow for a meeting of the Moscow School of Management SKOLKOVO and makes a speech that indirectly praises both himself and Putin.

Mr. Lee Kuan Yew, rightly considered to be the father of the Singaporean economic miracle, said: ‘Effective leadership is precisely what will allow private companies operating in emerging markets not only to grow, but to become the locomotives of such markets. Strong leadership qualities are definitely an asset for the country, but they are especially important when the country experiences watershed moments in its economic history and is prepared to make a breakthrough’

“Mr. Lee Kuan Yew, rightly considered to be the father of the Singaporean economic miracle.”

I have to disagree. Dr Goh Keng Swee along with a whole band of people should be credited with laying the economic foundation for Singapore. Lee Kuan Yew did not struck me as having a lot of business acumen. Take the Suzhou Industrial Park as an example – almost a complete diasaster!!

As with all generalizations, there is some untruth to it. So I have to agree on the point that LKY is indeed not the only “Father” of Singapore’s sterling economic record.

However, I think that an interesting perspective exists and will like to express it: LKY certainly must be credited for having that astuteness and accuracy of mind to appoint and subsequently promote Dr. GKS.

We all know how important it is that the leader appoints and chooses the right men – a wrong decision at this strategic level will prove to be ultimately fatal and it’s consequence far-reaching and scary. So, I think due credit must be given to LKY for having provided that environment to and empowerment of Dr. GKS for him to create the Singapore it proudly is today.

Just my 2 cents’ worth. Do not slam the Man himself without a peek into the “other” side of things. Yup 🙂
